Pregnant women in the U.S. do not get enough exercise
|
| April 6, 2010 - Three out of four pregnant women in the U.S. do not get enough exercise, according to a new study.
Researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill found that, at most, 23% of pregnant women engaged in as much physical activity as is recommended by government and private health groups.
The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) — the nation’s largest organization of ob-gyns — calls for women with uncomplicated pregnancies to get 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise daily on most days.
The Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week during pregnancy.
But the analysis of data from a nationally representative health survey confirms that a minority of women are meeting these exercise goals.
Exercise Benefits Mom, Baby
Studies suggest that women who exercise regularly during pregnancy have better outcomes, including lower rates of gestational diabetes, hypertension, and depression.

FREE H1N1 Discussion
This Saturday January 2nd!
|
H1N1: An integrative approach. The amount of media attention given to H1N1 has been overwhelming. It can be hard to separate fact from fiction. This presentation will sift through the hype and deliver a fair and balanced report. The focus will be on flu prevention as well as providing both conventional and alternative treatment options. We will discuss the flu vaccine and special populations including pregnant women and children. This is a collaboration between Dr. Caitlin O’Connor, a naturopathic doctor and certified professional midwife (allfamiliesnaturalhealth.com) and Dr. Bryan Kono, an integrative pediatrician (www.partnersinpediatrics.com). We just came across this great article about Pilates during Pregnancy in Mindful Mama. Check it out!
BY DEIRDRE SHEVLIN BELL
When I was expecting my first child, Pilates prepared me better than all the parenting books on my shelf put together. Because I have a bad back—a really bad back, fused throughout the thoracic spine and immobilized by two stainless-steel rods, thank you scoliosis—I worried about what all the baby carrying, feeding and bent-forward baby-gazing would do to me. So in the months leading up to my son’s arrival, I did Pilates religiously: private lessons once a week and classes twice a week, in addition to home practice. When I finally held my son for the first time, I was the strongest I had ever been. Without so much as a twinge or strain, I could lift him and carry him for hours on end—all 26 pounds of him.
Go ahead, uncross your legs: My first child came to me at the age of 19 months, through adoption. With my second child, born almost a year ago, I expected Pilates to be just as big a helper. But here was the thing: Very early on, around 10 weeks, I found that I couldn’t do my regular routine anymore. After every Pilates class, I’d come home with a piercing pain in my pelvis so fierce I could hardly walk. It didn’t take long for me to realize I needed a break—or at least a change—in my routine. So for the next couple months, I took a Pilates hiatus. I got my exercise by walking and doing water aerobics, but I still felt myself getting weak. My body was changing rapidly, and I knew I needed Pilates to stay strong.
One of my favorite things about Pilates is how flexible and accommodating it is; I knew I could adapt my routine to my pelvic issues. With a lot of research and a very good Pilates instructor, I was able to bring Pilates back into my life in a way that worked for me. What I learned in the process is that Pilates really is the perfect exercise during (and after) pregnancy: It’s all about creating space and encouraging good posture, balance, and body awareness—just what my then pregnant body needed.
Pilates Through the Changes
In the 40 weeks or so between conception and childbirth, a woman’s body goes through a seemingly impossible metamorphosis: the uterus, which previously fit neatly inside the pelvis, eventually expands all the way up to the rib cage—pushing and squishing anything in its path; blood volume increases by about 50 percent; ligaments loosen, thanks to the pregnancy hormone relaxin; and oh yeah, there’s the 25 (or more) pounds of weight gain.

It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
Did you know that breastfeeding may help
prevent Breast Cancer?
We have all seen the ribbons around town and unfortunately, most of us have been touched by breast cancer in our own lives. I know when my sister was diagnosed at the young age of 34 I was in total shock. Then when my other sister had a scare at the same age I realized we have to do everything we can to try to prevent and catch breast cancer as early as possible. Almost everyone I know has a story similar to mine and my sisters. Breast cancer is just one of many reasons breastfeeding is best for mom and baby. ~Lauren
Susan G Koman foundation has great resources for preventing breast cancer and
according to their website: “mothers who breastfed for a lifetime total of one year (combined duration of breastfeeding for all children) were found to be slightly less likely to develop breast cancer than mothers who never breastfed [133]. Those who breastfed for a lifetime total of two years got about twice the benefit of those who breastfed for a total of one year. Women who had a combined duration of more than two years of breastfeeding had even greater benefit”Click here to read more.
“August 13, 2009 - Women with a family history of breast cancer who have ever breastfed reduce their risk of getting pre menopausal breast cancer by nearly 60%, according to a new study. ‘For women with a family history of breast cancer, this suggests an extra benefit [of breastfeeding] is, it may reduce the risk of breast cancer,’ says Alison Stuebe, MD, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the lead author of the study. It is published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.” -Medscape, click here to read more. Registration required.

We now have Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Belts.
Maternity Support Belts are great for reducing back pain, supporting the uterus and help reduce stretch marks.
Postpartum support is great for separated abs and helping bring the tummy back down after pregnancy.
What are Separated abs?
A common condition known as diastasis recti, separated abs are often left undiagnosed. Separated Abs can lead to lower back pain, poor and painful posture, and the dreaded “Mummy Tummy” because the ab muscles are unable to do their job.
Not sure if you have
separated abs?
Come to Post Belly Abs, Buns and Hips Thursdays at 4pm and we will check you for split abs and give you safe and effective ways to help bring them back together.
Rolfing is also GREAT for repairing separated abs!

Belly Bliss is turning 1 year old!!
We couldn’t be more thrilled to be celebrating our 1st birthday this very fitting week of Labor Day. Belly Bliss has been a labor of love for us the past few years. We opened at a time that was very economically challenging for everyone but with few expectations and many dreams we continued on our path, following our Satya. Thank you to our friends and families who have shared our trials, celebrations and many hours of incessant talking about Belly Bliss. Thank you to our community for sharing your talents with us. Thank you to our teachers and practitioners. You believed in us and often gave your heart and souls to Belly Bliss this year as if it was your own, and we feel it is. Last but certainly not least, thank you to all of our moms and clients who shared this precious time in their lives with us. Your support has not only gotten us this far but also made coming to work every day (and sometimes in the middle of the night) a true joy. We are truly grateful and honored.
Namaste~ Deb & Lauren
Enough with the mush…. Let’s celebrate!
We would love it if you would join us for a BBQ. We thought it would be fun to do something casual where we catch up and see how your family (or belly) is growing. We will be grilling at Wash Park from 1-4pm on September 13th. We will have plenty of burgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers along with beer, wine, soda and juice. Feel free to bring a side dish to share. We will also have an array of games to play. Please bring a blanket for your family, any games you like to play and your families and babies (especially if we have not seen them yet)! We hope to see you all there. Please let us know if you think you will be able to make it so we know how much of everything to get.We will be at the site off of Franklin and Mississippi, turn West on Mississippi off of Franklin. We will have pink and orange balloons so we are easy to spot.
The above info went out in 2 Evites (there were too many people to get it all on one) to all of our friends, family and Belly Bliss families. If you did not get the Evite, check your spam, if it is not there and you are able to join us reply to this message or stop on by. We look forward to seeing you there.
We will be closed Labor Day, Monday September 7th.
